You are only fertile for a few days each month. Natural family planning is a system that you use to determine if you are fertile on any given day.
If you are looking to postpone pregnancy - when you find out which days you are fertile, you simply abstain on those days.
Based on Actual Signs of Fertility
Modern methods of natural family planning use your body's actual signs of fertility to tell if you are fertile or infertile.
The Old Rhythm Method was based on averages - not actual signs of fertility. Click here to see
how Natural Family Planning is different from the old Rhythm Method.
There are three key fertility signs:
*basal body temperature
*cervix
*cervical mucus
The best natural family planning methods use a combination of two or all three signs to determine if you are fertile.
The most effective form of natural family planning is called the sympto-thermal method (or STM for short).
When you use the sympto-thermal method, you chart all three fertility signs. You watch for changes in the signs to indicate when you are fertile or not fertile.
Monitoring two or three signs of fertility gives you a back-up or double-check of your fertility.
The double and triple check of your fertility is what makes the sympto-thermal method of natural family planning so effective.
When you use natural family planning as natural birth control - you keep a record of your fertility. You create your own fertility chart.
